As the Semikron Group announced on August 01, 2022, it was the victim of a cyber attack by a professional hacker group. According to Semikron, the systems were partially encrypted. It was not yet clear who exactly was behind the attack and whether a ransom was being demanded or paid.

The high rate of attacks on large companies or powerful medium-sized companies continues. In particular, the fact that large APT groups offer their ransomware as RaaS - ransomware as a service, causes an increased number of cyber attacks. Now it has also hit the Nuremberg-based manufacturer of power electronics Semikron.

Open communication about the attack

In any case, the SEMIKRON Group is on the right track, since it communicates openly about the attack and also informs its customers. Immediately after the attack, the company released a brief update on the state of affairs:

“The SEMIKRON Group fell victim to a cyber attack by a professional hacker group. As part of this attack, the perpetrators claimed to have stolen data from our system. Whether this is the case and which data this is exactly is currently being investigated. The authorities responsible for the group headquarters have been informed. As soon as more detailed information is available about a possible data leak, the affected customers and contractual partners will be informed. The attack also resulted in partial encryption of our IT systems and files. The entire network is currently being forensically examined and cleaned up.

We immediately took all necessary measures to limit possible damage. With the support of external cybersecurity and forensics experts, we are conducting an investigation into the incident. At the same time, we are working to restore the ability to work in order to minimize disruption to our employees, customers and contractual partners and to ensure the security of our IT systems as best as possible. In addition, we are supported by the responsible authorities in the investigations and the coordination of further measures.

Large companies targeted by attackers

It is to be expected that Semikron will also suffer from the attack for some time. This shows the experience of other attacks, such as recently on the building materials manufacturer Knauf or Manufacturer CWS, which sells products and services in the areas of hygiene and health and care. Provider Semikron also offers contact options on its website for people who have questions or information about the cyber attack.
