With the rapid increase in cyber attacks, the number of blocked threats increased by 42 percent year-on-year. Trend Micro blocks over 94 billion cyber threats in 2021.

Trend Micro, one of the world's leading providers of cybersecurity solutions, reports that it will block 94,2 billion cyberthreats in 2021 using its global threat intelligence infrastructure Smart Protection Network (SPN). The attacks targeted businesses, government agencies and consumers.

42 percent increase in cyber threats in 2021

The total number of threat detections in 2021 represents a 42 percent increase compared to 2020. As a result, attacks in the second half of 2021 reached the figure of over 53 billion, after Trend Micro had already blocked 2021 billion threats in the first half of 41.

The number of detections is the result of more than five trillion threat queries, an increase of 36 percent over the previous year. Trend Micro's SPN deploys over 250 million sensors worldwide to proactively protect businesses and individuals, faster.

IoT, IIoT and cloud still in focus

"Trend Micro detects cyber threats across endpoints, mobile devices, servers, the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), home network, messaging, network, web and cloud environments," said Richard Werner, Business Consultant at Trend Micro. “It's a testament to our continued efforts to prevent attacks and develop advanced detection technologies serving 500.000 commercial and government customers and millions of consumers. But it also underscores the growing threat from cybercriminals, as our 2022 Security Predictions report shows.”

Even with Trend Micro's comprehensive cloud-first solutions, security teams must brace for another onslaught of threats in 2022. Trend Micro predicts that IoT systems, global supply chains, cloud environments, and DevOps capabilities will all become increasingly targeted by attackers this year. Intensified, risk-based patching, Extended Detection and Response (XDR), server hardening, zero trust, network monitoring, and DevSecOps practices will be critical to address further increases in cyber risk in 2022.
