Identity security in the cloud: 89 percent of companies rely on IAM and PAM in the cloud. ThycoticCentrify Study: Protecting Digital Identities from Risks from Increasing Identity Sprawl.

Companies are increasingly relying on cloud-based identity and access management (IAM): 89 percent have implemented best-of-breed solutions for IAM and / or privileged access management (PAM) in cloud environments, which are increasingly hybrid or multi-cloud . This is the result of a new study by ThycoticCentrify, a leading provider of cloud identity security solutions, which emerged from the merger of the leading providers of Privileged Access Management (PAM) Thycotic and Centrify. 150 IT decision-makers in the USA were interviewed for the study.

Identity and Access Management (IAM) & Privileged Access Management (PAM)

The study commissioned by Centrify in collaboration with CensusWide shows how the digital transformation has increased dependency on the cloud and the associated risks have had an impact in the first twelve months of increased remote work. Compromised privileged credentials caused 90 percent of cyber attacks on cloud environments in the past year. In response to this alarming trend, companies are clearly stepping up their cloud protections.

Danger of identity sprawl

Almost 40 percent of respondents said managing multi-cloud environments was the biggest problem when moving to the cloud. More than three quarters of those responsible in companies started doing this three to six years ago. The respondents also stated that they use separate IAM tools for each cloud environment, which increases the complexity and identity sprawl.

The most important technologies for securing multi-cloud environments include

  • Privilege Elevation and Delegation Management (57 percent)
  • Multi-factor authentication or two-factor authentication (53 percent)
  • Password vaulting (51 percent)
  • Single Sign On (35 percent)
  • Active Directory (AD) Bridging (25 percent)

“The digital transformation, which was accelerated by many companies in early 2020, has significantly exacerbated the problem of identity proliferation. Login data is more at risk than ever before, ”says Özkan Topal, Sales Director at ThycoticCentrify. “There is already considerable insight into the need for cloud IAM solutions to protect digital identities. However, instead of using different tools for each cloud environment, those responsible should optimize their approach with comprehensive IAM and PAM platforms that are inherently designed to control access across all cloud providers and to minimize the attack surface .
