The cloud security specialist surveyed 150 companies of the same size in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. On average, 40 percent of employees work remotely. 64 percent of the companies had cyber insurance. The vast majority, 72 percent, were victims of a successful ransomware attack in 2022, of which 43 percent were repeat victims of ransomware attacks. 18 percent of those companies that experienced only one attack accepted the ransom demand to get their data back. In contrast, 23 percent of companies that were attacked twice or more paid the ransom. In the vast majority of cases, 71 percent, ransomware attacks started with email scams.

Critical infrastructure with more than two ransomware attacks

The industries affected by ransomware varied significantly. For example, 98 percent of consumer services and 85 percent of energy, oil/gas, and utilities companies have experienced at least one ransomware attack. The energy, oil/gas, and utilities industry was also the most likely to report two or more successful ransomware incidents, at 53 percent.

The results show that 69 percent of the companies participating in the study started the ransomware attack with a malicious email. For example, a phishing email aimed at stealing credentials that would allow the attackers to penetrate the corporate network. Web applications and traffic rank second, posing a growing risk from an ever-expanding attack surface.
