On the occasion of a meeting with representatives of the automotive industry, BSI President Arne Schönbohm explains on the topic of secure digitization in cars:

“Today, no newly developed car can do without digital technology. Digitization enables new functions and services in vehicles, but also new opportunities in automotive development and production. Information security is thus becoming a key success factor in automotive engineering, because possible cyber attacks must not have any influence on driving safety or the functions of the car. At the same time, nobody will buy a self-driving car if it is not safe. Potential threats must be taken into account early in the development cycle of new models and tailored protective mechanisms must be installed. Just as cars 'Made in Germany' enjoy a global reputation, information security is a quality feature of digitization 'Made in Germany'. As the federal cyber security authority, we are therefore working intensively with the automotive industry to bring these two successful models together and to expand Germany's leading position in these areas. "

BSI and VDA signed a letter of intent

In June 2020, the BSI signed a declaration of intent with the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), which included an agreement to regularly exchange information on issues of information security. The aim of the cooperation is to establish a common understanding of the sub-areas of cyber security in vehicles and information security in the automotive industry and to derive needs for action, for example in the area of standardization. As a result, recommendations for action for politics and the automotive industry are to be jointly developed.
