Although authentication using passwords has long been criticized from a security perspective, companies are still years away from a passwordless reality.
This is shown by a new study from Delinea, the specialist for solutions that seamlessly expand privileged access management. 68 percent of the IT decision-makers surveyed stated that passwords are far from “dead” in their companies. The aim of the report “The Future of Workplace Passwords: Not Dead, but Evolving*” was to better understand the future of passwords in the workplace - against the background of the spread of alternative authentication options in the consumer environment such as on smartphones and mobile apps . The survey showed that solutions that users are already familiar with in their private lives are also most likely to replace traditional passwords at work. These primarily include biometrics (58%), other multi-factor authentication technologies (46%), one-time passwords (37%) and passkeys (35%).
Passwordless procedures
In fact, most companies are still years away from a passwordless reality. While only 30 percent of respondents said their organization has already begun transitioning to alternative authentication methods, 36 percent and 21 percent said they are still 1-2 years and 3-4 years away, respectively. Barriers to implementing passwordless technologies cited included outdated platforms and applications that require passwords and MFA (43%), the need for uniform authentication methods across the board (37%), and employees not understanding or trusting passwordless processes (28% ). Additionally, 95 percent of IT decision makers surveyed said their organizations need to meet various compliance requirements that require proof of access controls, which could be made more complicated by adapting to new authentication methods.
Despite these obstacles, it is clear that the user experience of authentication is bound to evolve. 35 percent of respondents expect access to workplace systems to require MFA at login in the future, while 19 percent expect a future in which a username or password is no longer required. In addition, almost 60 percent of respondents said that their companies already use a Privileged Access Management (PAM) solution to manage passwords in the workplace. PAM solutions can help organizations move passwords away as they continue to use older technologies, move to the cloud, or begin using passwordless solutions. When combined with biometric and other authentication technologies, PAM can both enforce a secure least privilege approach and eliminate productivity-reducing password requirements.
