Despite ransomware ransom: Only 24 percent receive all data

As a study shows, despite paying a ransom, only 24 percent of German companies are able to recover all their data after a ransomware attack. The majority of businesses struggle with backup and recovery solutions.

91 percent of German IT and cybersecurity leaders are concerned that their company might not be able to maintain business continuity after a cyber attack. That's according to the second report from Rubrik Zero Labs, the research arm of Zero Trust Data Security™ company Rubrik. The issue, titled "The Hard Truths of Data Security," provides an insight into the challenges facing cybersecurity in 2022 and how organizations can achieve robust cyber resilience.

1.600 executives provide information

Rubrik Zero Labs commissioned its second global study from Wakefield Research, providing insights from more than 1.600 IT and cybersecurity executives from 10 countries including Germany. Respondents include CISOs, CIOs, Vice Presidents and Directors. Key findings from Rubrik Zero Labs' The State of Data Security report include:

Everyone "does" data security, but reality and results vary:

  • Only 62 percent of IT and cybersecurity leaders have developed or reviewed an incident response plan in 2022. Only 63 percent tested backup and restore options.
  • Data security is becoming more and more complex and the amount of data to be protected is increasing rapidly. Rubrik data shows that the average increase in globally protected data will be 2022 percent in 25. There are clear differences depending on the storage location: the increase was 19 percent on-premises and 61 percent in the cloud. The SaaS data to be protected even increased by 236 percent in the last year.
  • Only half (51 percent) of companies in Germany are currently using at least one Zero Trust initiative.

Insufficient: Backups as a last line of defense

  • 93 percent of respondents from Germany state that malicious actors tried to gain access to the backups during a cyber attack. 73 percent of the attacks were at least partially successful.
  • 99 percent of the IT and security managers surveyed in Germany state that their organization has backup and recovery technology. However, 86 percent report significant problems with their solution.
  • Globally, 72 percent of companies say they paid ransom for their data after a ransomware attack. Companies in Germany are much more reluctant: only 57 percent of those affected paid.
  • However, of those surveyed in Germany who paid the ransom after a ransomware attack, only 24 percent say they were able to fully recover their data after a ransomware attack using the attackers' decryption tools. However, the low success rate is still above the global average of 16 percent.

New and constantly evolving tasks meet well-known challenges

  • 42 percent of German IT security managers consider their cyber security budget for 2023 to be insufficient.
  • 24 percent of those surveyed in Germany expect their IT and cyber security budgets to decrease in 2023.
  • IT and security leaders face major hurdles in bringing their teams together. Only 6 percent in Germany do not see any factors that limit the coordination of IT and cyber security that they need to pay attention to this year.

“It is clear that organizations understand the severity and impact of cyber incidents. But we also see a number of roadblocks stemming from a lack of preparation, misaligned IT and security teams, and over-reliance on inadequate backup and recovery solutions,” said Steven Stone, head of Rubrik Zero Labs. “In the current cybersecurity era, the best outcome is to ensure cyber resilience. Incidents are inevitable. Therefore, it is crucial to reduce the risk before a response is required. In any case, it is important to protect the crown jewels of a company: its data.”
