Attacks increase in the first half of 2021, with Trend Micro blocking 41 billion cyber threats. Ransomware remains the main threat as cyber criminals evolve their attack tactics. The current safety report shows alarming figures with an increase of 47 percent.

Trend Micro, one of the world's leading providers of cybersecurity solutions, blocked 2021 billion email threats, malicious files and URLs for its customers in the first half of 40,9. This corresponds to an increase of 47 percent compared to the same period in the previous year.

Ransomware remained the top cyber threat through the first half of the year. Cyber criminals targeted well-known companies and often worked with third parties to gain access to their victims' networks. Using advanced and targeted tools and techniques, data has been stolen and encrypted.

Ransomware and banking attacks at the forefront

The banking sector was disproportionately affected, with ransomware attacks increasing by 2021 percent in the first half of 1.318 compared to the previous year. While ransomware was one of the top threats to global businesses in the first half of 2021, it wasn't the only one. A summary of the main findings of the report by the Japanese security specialist gives:

  • Business Email Compromise (BEC) attacks increased by 4 percent, which may be due to new attack opportunities in the wake of the corona pandemic.
  • Cryptocurrency miners were the most common malware detected, ahead of WannaCry and web shells.
  • Trend Micro's Zero Day Initiative discovered 770 vulnerabilities - a slight decrease (2 percent) from the first half of 2020.
  • A total of 164 malicious apps related to COVID-19 fraud attempts were discovered. 54 percent of them identified themselves as TikTok.

“To reduce cyber risks, companies must first understand the extent, complexity and specific characteristics of the threat landscape,” says Richard Werner, Business Consultant at Trend Micro. “Trend Micro offers comprehensive protection against rapidly evolving threats such as ransomware, phishing and BEC. In addition, our semi-annual Roundup report provides important details for businesses and others who care about improving cybersecurity. "

Midyear Security Roundups

The results of the Midyear Security Roundup show the effectiveness and the growing need for a holistic and scalable security solution for companies. As threats increase and become more sophisticated, enterprise SOC teams need a platform that streamlines security processes without compromising their reliability.
