According to an interview by WirtschaftsWoche with Vera Jourova, Vice President of the EU Commission, her authority wants to take action against the use of the Pegasus spy software. Europe must show that it values data protection highly.

As the Vice-President of the EU Commission Vera Jourova announced, one cannot demand more from the USA in terms of data protection and at the same time let the spy software Pegasus run free in Europe. one must first "put one's own house in order".

Ban Pegasus spy software

Europe would be in a much better position to convince the rest of the world of the value of data protection if spy software like Pegasus were not used on EU territory. "I'm looking for a legal way of how we can react effectively at EU level," Jourova told WirtschaftsWoche. She emphasized that she needed the support of the data protection authorities to do this. EU member states have so far reserved the right to use spy software such as Pegasus, citing national security.

French President Macron is probably a victim

Last year, WirtschaftsWoche published that the Israeli manufacturer NSO's Pegasus spy software was used by many governments. The victims apparently included French President Emmanuel Macron, but also numerous Diplomats, journalists and national opposition politicians.

In the meantime there are also first instructions how best to defend yourself against the Pegasus software.
