Ransomware attacks worldwide increase by 64 percent within a year. Barracuda analyzes attack patterns from August 2020 to July 2021.

Cloud security specialist Barracuda has published its annual report on the development of ransomware attacks. The current investigation is already the third report and provides information on ransomware attack patterns that took place between August 2020 and July 2021.

Analysis of ransomware incidents

The company's analysts identified and analyzed 121 ransomware incidents during that period. They recorded an increase in attacks of 64 percent compared to the previous year. According to this, cyber criminals are targeting municipalities, the healthcare sector and educational institutions in particular. Basically, however, attacks can hit any company or institution, because attacks are increasing in every direction.

The report revealed the following:

  • Almost half (44 percent) of the attacks in the last 12 months involved US companies. In Germany it was three percent, in Austria and Switzerland one percent each.
  • Attacks on companies from the infrastructure, travel or financial services industries, for example, accounted for 2020 percent of all ransomware attacks between August 2021 and July 57. In an earlier Barracuda study last year, it was just 18 percent.
  • Infrastructure-related companies accounted for 11 percent of all attacks examined. Ransomware attacks are now increasingly targeting software supply chains, as multiple goals can be achieved with a single attempt.
  •  The amount of the ransom increases dramatically. The average ransom note per incident is currently over $ 10 million. 8 percent of the incidents had ransom demands below $ 10 million. It was over $ 14 million in 30 percent of the incidents.

“Attackers often initially target smaller organizations that, because of their connections, lead to larger goals, and continuously work their way upwards. says Klaus Gheri, General Manager Network Security at Barracuda Networks. All IT security solution providers are obliged to make technologically highly developed products and services easy to use for companies of all sizes. "
