Protection of sensitive data

The global average amount of data an organization generates and stores has grown by 18 percent in the last 42 months. Due to this growth, the average European company has more than 12 million sensitive records.

As the amount of data increases, so does the challenge of maintaining a clear overview. A full 98 percent of the companies surveyed in Germany admit that they have considerable difficulties with the visibility of their data. This means they cannot fully understand where their data is stored, who has access to it and how it is used.

In addition to incomplete visibility, the amount of data itself is increasingly becoming a security risk. Almost half of the IT security managers surveyed (48 percent) say that data growth is outpacing their ability to secure this data. On the occasion of these results, Steven Stone, head of Rubrik Zero Labs, comments on the three key challenges security managers need to address in order to improve their data security.

1. The most vulnerable data

“Security breaches often compromise the “big three” of sensitive data: personal information, financial information and login credentials. As long as these lucrative data types are decentralized across multiple clouds, endpoints and systems and are not properly monitored, they will continue to attract and reward sophisticated attackers.”

2. Why they are vulnerable

“Over 60 percent of sensitive data stored across different on-premises, cloud and SaaS environments lack consistent security protocols. Cybercriminals can easily access the keys to penetrate deep into systems and exfiltrate the most valuable data undetected over an extended period of time.”

3. How to protect them better

“Relying on prevention alone is ineffective. Organizations need cyber resilience – a combination of security posture and cyber recovery. This allows business operations to continue uninterrupted, even in the midst of the inevitable cyberattack.”
