Privileged access management with multi-factor authentication

Share post

The latest release of Secret Server from a leading provider of solutions that seamlessly extend Privileged Access Management (PAM) now supports enforcing multi-factor authentication (MFA) for credentials - in addition to the MFA already available for logins.

In this way, not only are highly sensitive login data even better secured, but companies are now able to meet increasingly strict compliance requirements. Stolen credentials and human error remain among the most common ways cybercriminals gain access to systems and data.

Most accesses with stolen logins

According to the 2023 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report, 86 percent of security breaches can be traced back to stolen credentials, and humans play a critical role in 74 percent of all breaches. If IT and security teams want to minimize these risks, they need another layer of security controls that ensure additional identity verification for highly privileged accounts. Cyber insurers have long since recognized this: in a recent survey by Delinea, 47 percent of the security professionals surveyed stated that a solution for enforcing multi-factor authentication was a prerequisite for successfully taking out a cyber policy.

Granular multi-factor authentication

The new Secret Server functionality is designed to be user-friendly and allows IT and security teams to quickly add various security requirements for individual privileged credentials - beyond MFA at login. It also provides the flexibility to enforce MFA on a single credential, multiple credentials in bulk, or all credentials in a folder through a policy. An additional layer of security further down the attack chain optimizes access controls for highly privileged accounts when the user's credentials and preferred MFA method at login are compromised.

Existing authentication solutions can still be used, as the latest version of Secret Server supports a wide variety of MFA types, such as the Delinea Mobile App, Yubikey and other devices, the FIDO2 protocols, etc. This extension is exclusive to the Secret Server Cloud, delivered through the Delinea platform, and enables granular controls that help organizations mitigate risk and meet cyber insurance and compliance requirements while improving productivity of the user in view.
