IT security specialist Cloudflare announces the standard and free deployment of post-quantum cryptography to protect its websites, APIs, cloud tools and remote workers from future threats.
This now allows all Cloudflare customers to smoothly enter the next era of cybersecurity standards—instantly and at no cost.
Set the course before an emergency occurs
Quantum computers solve complex arithmetic tasks many times faster than today's computers and are expected to reach such a sophisticated level in the next few years that they will be able to decrypt most of the encrypted data on the Internet. Recently, US President Joe Biden's administration instructed authorities and encouraged the private sector to prepare for quantum computers that could later crack the encryption of data stolen today. CISOs and CIOs are aware that they need to set the stage for a transition to post-quantum cryptography now before the real thing happens. However, there are new providers on the market who want to profit from this development with unnecessarily high fees. This means that some companies, but also non-profit and civil society organizations, simply cannot afford this technology.
Data protection as a human right
“Some companies want to overcharge CISOs for preparing for future attacks by quantum computers. At Cloudflare, we believe privacy should be a human right. We also believe that post-quantum security should be the new reference for the internet - not an opportunity to fleece companies. That's why we're committed to providing businesses, nonprofits, and users with the most advanced cryptography available and never charging for it,” said Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare.
Cloudflare has been involved in the development of standards for post-quantum cryptography since 2018 and has been making the technology available to interested customers as a beta version since 2022. We estimate that more than 99 percent of the websites that already support NIST-endorsed post-quantum cryptography for their connections run on Cloudflare. Since 2019, Cloudflare has protected over 1 billion HTTP requests with post-quantum cryptography.
