Starting shot for gigabit WLAN in Europe - EU releases the lower 6 GHz band. The additional frequency block (5925–6425 MHz) doubles the spectrum that has been usable in Europe so far and gives the latest technology standard Wi-Fi 6 a performance boost. A comment from Lancom.

Now it is official: More than 15 years after the last spectrum expansion, the EU today announced the release of 500 MHz in the lower 6 GHz band for license-free use by WLAN. The publication in the Official Journal (OJEU) paves the way for Gigabit WiFi in Europe. But that should only be the beginning, believes LANCOM founder and managing director Ralf Koenzen.

Wi-Fi 6E - Enhanced - is coming

Ralf Koenzen: “Today is a good day for Europe's digital future! With the release of the lower 6 GHz band and the associated extra spectrum of 500 MHz, the EU is laying the foundation for ultra-fast WLAN as a key technology on the way to the wireless gigabit society. As a European WLAN manufacturer, we have accompanied the political decision-making process from the start and thank the EU and everyone involved for this historic step.

The additional frequency block (5925–6425 MHz) doubles the spectrum that has been usable in Europe so far and gives the latest technology standard Wi-Fi 6 an immense performance boost: As Wi-Fi 6E (Enhanced) - as it is marketed - WLAN pulls in latency rates with the cellular standard 5G same. This results in completely new application scenarios, for example in real-time applications such as augmented and virtual reality. Even in environments with high user density such as schools, lecture halls or football stadiums, users will surf at gigabit speed in the future. At LANCOM we are planning to launch the first Wi-Fi 6 E enterprise solutions in autumn.

Stage goal reached

But despite all the euphoria: In order to unlock the full potential of WLAN and keep pace globally, the lower part of the 6 GHz band must only be a stage goal. Numerous countries, including leading economies such as the USA, South Korea and many countries in Central and South America, have already presented and opened the entire band of 1.200 MHz for WLAN (5925–7125 MHz). Australia, Japan and Canada will follow shortly. Europe must follow suit here! After all, development does not stand still. Multi-gigabit applications such as immersive video or real-time holograms are already showing where the journey is headed. Studies estimate the global value added by WLAN in 2025 at 5 trillion US dollars. Accompanied by the exponential increase in wirelessly networked devices. The associated flood of data can only be handled by mobile communications and WLAN in tandem. The complete opening of the 6 GHz band for WLAN and the most extensive possible regulatory harmonization create the necessary prerequisites for this. "
