IDG study "Cloud Security 2021": Categorizing cloud data protects against risks. The recently presented IDG study "Cloud Security 2021" deals with the big issue of data security in the cloud and highlights many central aspects, such as encryption, data theft or the planned security budget of the companies surveyed.
The subject of data categorization, which is sometimes neglected, is also being scrutinized. The results clearly show that the need for a classification of proprietary data was recognized by most of the study participants.
Study shows: data classification is on the radar
After all, 53 percent of the decision-makers answered the question "Does your company categorize which type of data or documents may be processed with which cloud services?" With a decisive "YES"; The most important criterion here is the use of the data. By contrast, eleven percent of the DACH companies surveyed do not plan to categorize data before transferring data to the cloud.
Postponed is not canceled - or is it?
But what about the rest? A full 29 percent - and thus almost a third of all decision-makers - intend at least to subject their data to a classification in the future before transferring it to the cloud. But in doing so they postpone the not inconsiderable decision of a clear separation of their data to an uncertain future; maybe this will happen before the planned cloud migration - but maybe months or even years later. This hesitant decision-making behavior harbors great risks. Because at the latest when business-critical data falls into the wrong hands due to a deferred classification, those responsible will become aware of the weight of their omissions. This plays a crucial role, especially in highly regulated industries that are currently pushing towards the cloud.
"A data leak from personal data can quickly result in high GDPR fines," warns Karl Altmann, CEO of the Munich business cloud provider uniscon. Therefore, all IT managers are advised to make the necessary thoughts about a subdivision of their data stock according to their criticality before the cloud migration.
