Kaspersky introduces the new version of Kaspersky Security for Microsoft Office 365, which offers advanced functions for protecting confidential business data. The product enables access to a list of files which may contain personal information or bank card data and which are stored in the Microsoft 365 applications used.

This gives security managers an insight into who has access to this information and ensures that company policies are being followed and that the data is not at risk of being compromised.

Recent Kaspersky research shows that nearly half (45 percent) of data breaches in organizations worldwide involve personal data; credit card information is compromised 26 percent of the time. Apart from the loss of reputation, should a data protection problem become public, personal data is subject to data protection regulations in many countries and regions, which is why protecting it should be one of the top cybersecurity priorities for companies. Often, however, such data circulates in corporate communication channels, so cybersecurity teams cannot rule out that it has been disclosed or leaked somewhere.

New feature data discovery

The new Data Discovery feature in the updated version of Kaspersky Security for Microsoft Office 365 provides transparency about data with sensitive data in Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive and Teams applications. For this purpose, a connection to the customer's Microsoft 365 cloud tenant is established and all files are scanned with special heuristics that users upload to applications. It can be used to identify credit card details as well as personal data, such as driver's licenses, ID cards, passports, residence permits, social security and tax payment information. The analysis is carried out directly in the customer's Microsoft 365 cloud tenant, so that no documents or data contained therein leave the customer's environment.

List of personal data

The list of personal data files is available in the Kaspersky Security for Microsoft Office 365 management console. Administrators can sort according to the density of personal data to find the most important files and learn more about each document: author, location in Microsoft 365 applications, who has internal access and whether it can be accessed externally. The administrator can then contact the file owners and ask them to adjust the access settings accordingly. The product scans all new files as they are added to any of the applications so that IT security teams always have the most up-to-date information.

More protection for Microsoft Office 365

"With this new service, Kaspersky Security for Microsoft Office 365 not only protects business emails and communications from phishing and malware, but also helps companies improve data protection," said Andrey Dankevich, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Kaspersky. “By gaining insight into how files containing sensitive data are stored in the company, IT security administrators can assess potential risks and address them in a timely manner. You can also see the general trend towards storing such data and plan employee awareness training accordingly.” Kaspersky Security for Microsoft Office 365 is available as a standalone product or as part of Kaspersky Endpoint Security Cloud Plus.
