Are IoT search engines like Shodan or Censys a curse or a blessing? An ESET security expert takes a critical look at Shodan and Censys.
Shodan and Censys are search engines for the Internet of Things (IoT). With these portals, devices and systems that are permanently connected to the Internet can be managed. These include, for example, surveillance cameras, webcams, servers, PCs, smart home systems, industrial controls or various network components. Both services see themselves as helpers to improve IT security. Security solutions for companies and private users, however, recognize these queries as potential attacks. In his current article "Shodan and Censys - Freund or Feind?" On the security blog WeliveSecurity.de, ESET security expert Thomas Uhlemann examines the question of how search engines collect data and whether this can be misused by cyber criminals.
