In September & October 2021, the independent institute AV-TEST tested 3 security solutions for companies and 10 single-user versions under MacOS BigSur for their protective effect, system load and false alarms.

All products were tested for 2 months in the laboratory under realistic conditions. The laboratory awarded up to 6 points for each test area. A product can achieve a maximum of 18 points in the test.

All Mac BigSur enterprise solutions with maximum score

The products Bitdefender Endpoint Security for Mac, FireEye Endpoint Security and Symantec Endpoint Security Complete were able to complete the test with the maximum number of points. For this they receive an award for tested safety from the laboratory.

Macs with BigSur were used as test platforms. To test for the protective effect, the products had to detect and delete almost 1.000 current Mac malware. When testing the system load, it was checked whether the protection solutions slowed down the Mac when surfing or copying data. In the last test for false positives, almost 130.000 harmless Mac files had to be recognized as such.

Further single-user versions under BigSur in the test

While the endpoint solutions are managed via the server, this is not the case with the single-user versions. AV-TEST examined a total of 10 products according to the same scheme as the company solutions.

These products were in the test:

  • Avast Security
  • AVG AntiVirus
  • Avira Security
  • Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac
  • Canimaan software ClamXAV
  • F-Secure Safe
  • Kaspersky Internet Security
  • Norton LifeLock Norton 360
  • Protected.net Total AV
  • Trend Micro Antivirus

Most of the 10 versions for single workstations that were examined also performed very well. The worst protection package for the Mac got 17 out of 18 possible points - all the others were even better.
