Finally: Passwords are dying out

Stolen passwords are one of the main risks, which is why passwords are increasingly taking a back seat. Additional authentication methods and security controls that push passwords into the background are changing the way identities are verified and proven.

Passwordless methods play a particularly important role here. This is the result of a survey by Delinea, the specialist in solutions that seamlessly extend Privileged Access Management (PAM), at this year's BlackHat USA Conference in Las Vegas. 79 percent of the 100 security and IT professionals surveyed are of the opinion that passwords will evolve or even become unnecessary in the future.

From MFA to passkeys

In order to adequately protect their login data and identities, the majority of participants surveyed rely on additional authentication methods. Forms of multi-factor authentication (MFA) are predominantly used (73 percent), followed by authentication apps (57 percent) and biometric procedures (40 percent). In addition, more than half (52%) use a password manager, while slightly fewer (34%) rely on a PAM solution to securely store their passwords. One in five also said they now use passkeys instead of or in addition to passwords.

“The survey results make it clear that the majority of people have now understood what passwordless actually means and are not just using the marketing term. It's finally clear that it's about moving passwords into the background and instead using simpler additional forms of authentication,” said Joseph Carson, Chief Security Scientist and Advisory CISO at Delinea. “It also fits that 75 percent of those surveyed are aware that the quickest way to gain access to a network is through social engineering and stolen identities and passwords. The faster companies and end users advance their identity and access security beyond passwords, the safer we will be as a society.”
