Browser extension and desktop app support storing and managing passkeys. This allows users to log into websites more securely than ever before. Passkeys are also phishing resistant and protects teams.
Keeper Security announces passkey support for its platform. Passkeys are stored and managed in Keeper and can be used for easy login to websites and applications in all desktop web browsers and operating systems. The passkeys can also be exchanged between teams in companies.
Simple and phishing-resistant passkeys
Passkeys are easier to use than many traditional authentication methods. They are also resistant to phishing, which allows users to consistently and securely log in to supported websites. The passwordless technology, first introduced in 2022, is based on industry standards from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and the FIDO Alliance and is supported by Apple, Google, Microsoft, Paypal, eBay and others.
“Keeper is continually innovating to provide individuals, families and businesses with the simplest and most secure way to log into and protect Internet accounts. Protecting data while improving the user experience is one of our top priorities,” said Craig Lurey, CTO and co-founder of Keeper Security.
“Passkeys bring us one step closer to a passwordless future. Therefore, we support their use and provide means to store and use them across platforms alongside a variety of other login methods, including the traditional username and password.”
Login to accounts and apps
A passkey is a cryptographic key that allows users to log into accounts and apps without typing a password — similar to a digital key card stored on a phone, tablet, or computer. Apple, Google, and Microsoft have started adding Passkey support to their operating systems. Likewise, website and application developers are encouraged to integrate Passkey support into their login flows. Because passkeys only work on sites and platforms that support them, Keeper has created a passkey directory to provide users with an up-to-date list of where they can use passkeys.
Management via web vault and desktop application
Keeper supports the use of passkeys in its browser extension by storing and autofilling the passkey, similar to a password-based login. The Keeper web vault and desktop application allow for the management of the passkeys, for example for sharing with team members. The Keeper browser extension and vault will be automatically updated with this new feature over the next few weeks. Customers can also use the pre-release now. Android devices will support Passkeys along with the Android 14 release later this year. Apple hasn't announced any plans to support third-party password managers with Passkeys yet.
