E-commerce study by A10 Networks: Multi-cloud and cybersecurity dominate IT in e-commerce, polynimbus approach becomes essential. Increasing business volumes, complex multi-cloud architectures and increasing cyber threats mean a multitude of challenges for IT organizations in e-commerce

A recent study by A10 Networks and Gatepoint Research examined the latest trends in e-commerce IT. The current survey is particularly relevant due to the simultaneous focus of executives on digital business growth and overcoming essential challenges in the areas of cybersecurity and multi-cloud management.

The results illustrate the existence of an increasingly complex and diverse e-commerce technology landscape. There is also a growing awareness of the importance of polynimbus management to ensure consistent, secure, and cost-effective multi-cloud operations.

Application Delivery - Multi-Cloud or Hybrid-Cloud Approach?

With e-commerce activity on the rise, 86 percent of respondents said network traffic had increased - more than a third of those saw growth of over 20 percent. Although the majority of these companies continue to use private, on-premises data centers as the primary hosting environment for applications, the cloud also plays an important role. Almost as many survey participants name a public cloud infrastructure as an essential hosting environment for applications. This trend will continue to grow: 60 percent of those surveyed are planning to move applications to the public cloud in the next three years - making this the most frequently cited technology strategy in the survey.

Cloud services offer a flexible, scalable and cost-efficient answer to changing requirements and are generally used by companies in the digital space in one or even both ways: The hybrid cloud approach was used by 35 percent of the survey participants as a strategy for their hosting of applications called.

Cloud approach for 35 percent strategy for their hosting

"Here, companies use cloud services in combination with local resources to provide peak capacities when required or to support certain workloads or use cases," explains Heiko Frank, Principal System Engineer at A10 Networks. “With a multi-cloud strategy, companies use multiple cloud services from any number of providers within their corporate cloud architecture. In any case, more diverse and flexible strategies for hosting and application delivery will become more important in the rapidly changing and unpredictable e-commerce industry. "

However, the public cloud is not always the ideal solution. More than a fifth of the respondents experienced a service failure of their public cloud infrastructure, while eleven percent experienced significant problems with the multi-cloud connection or even outages. Careful provider selection and effective management are just as important in the cloud as they are on premises.

E-commerce cybersecurity - from hacking to DDoS

E-commerce providers are faced with a serious threat situation in the area of cybersecurity. Respondents expressed significant concerns about the damage to their reputation and brand. Almost two thirds of the participants named hacking and defacement as the greatest threats. Attacks like these can lead to a loss of customer confidence. However, the loss of actual data can create an even greater business risk. 52 percent of respondents named user data theft as the top threat, closely followed by stolen credit card information.

IT executives in e-commerce are worried about numerous attack methods used by cyber criminals. Phishing or fake websites were mentioned by 59 percent of those surveyed, whereby hackers trick unsuspecting users into putting their own cybersecurity at risk. DDoS attacks and malicious code are also very popular. In addition, more than a quarter of those surveyed fear insider attacks by their own authorized users.

"These concerns are by no means exaggerated," states Heiko Frank. “In our study, more than a quarter of respondents reported cybersecurity issues on the Internet, malware, ransomware, or malicious code, and XNUMX percent saw traffic impaired as a result of countering or remedying cybersecurity threats. DDoS attacks remain a constant threat and limit availability for nine percent of those surveyed. In addition, more than a fifth of those surveyed plan to implement DDoS protection measures in the next three years. "

Multi-cloud management make polynimbus essential

Multi-cloud and hybrid-cloud environments can have a critical impact on business agility, but a more diversified application delivery infrastructure also creates new challenges for IT. The majority of respondents named the complexity of administration and cross-cloud cybersecurity as key issues, while almost as many respondents had difficulties with transparency across the cloud data centers. With that in mind, it's not surprising that more than 40 percent of respondents had difficulty managing costs and compliance.

"In view of the complexity of multi-cloud and hybrid-cloud IT, polynimbus management functions have come into focus," says Heiko Frank. “A polynimbus approach provides a central point for cybersecurity and control and makes it easier to ensure the persistence of policies, functions and services in multi-cloud and hybrid-cloud environments. When evaluating the relevance of multi-cloud management functions, respondents rated centralized management and analytics along with consistent application delivery and cybersecurity, efficient automation and disaster recovery very high. "

Mastering challenges with the help of partners

E-commerce is facing huge challenges in order to ensure its own services and customer satisfaction.

"A basic focus on functioning cloud services and cybersecurity measures must be an essential part of the future strategy on the part of the various companies," explains Heiko Frank in conclusion. “Many companies have already taken a first important step: They have recognized that a far-reaching concept must be guaranteed in both of these areas in order to provide their services. When implementing the corresponding concepts and solutions, you can rely on reliable partners such as A10 Networks in a targeted manner. "
