Attacks by the pro-Russian Killnet group led to a 2022 percent increase in DDoS attacks against the US National Security Sector by the end of 16.815. This is what the ASERT research team reported to NETSCOUT.
Linked to the pro-Russian Killnet group, there was a massive 2022 percent spike in DDoS attacks against the US national security sector in the second half of 16.815, with attack spikes recorded on the day US President Biden and French President Macron publicly reaffirmed their support for Ukraine at the G7 summit. In Germany, too, Killnet group launched DDoS attacks on airport and government websites in January 2023 in retaliation for Germany's announced delivery of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.

“DDoS attacks are easier to launch, more complex in design, and more difficult to mitigate as attackers thwart security efforts. Attackers like Killnet have also started using resources like open proxies to achieve their goals in politically motivated DDoS attack campaigns.
DDoS attacks on websites of German airports, US hospitals and financial organizations around the world make it clear that cybercriminals increasingly want to disrupt the daily lives of numerous private individuals in order to cause damage. While most attacks by groups like Killnet have targeted websites and their general availability, it cannot be ruled out that these groups will also target critical infrastructure with broader implications,” said Richard Hummel, Research Lead, Threat Analysis at NETSCOUT's ASERT research team.
