Data quality for machine learning and artificial intelligence

IDC study: Ensuring data quality as well as recording and classification of relevant data slows down data-driven business models in Germany - also for machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Extensively growing amounts of data in companies, enormous computing power and powerful analysis tools offer companies and organizations of all industries and sizes excellent framework conditions for the successful use of comprehensive analytics approaches of machine learning and artificial intelligence. In theory at least, this gives them very good prerequisites for using their data to optimize internal processes and to develop new business models in order to remain competitive. The new IDC study on the current data situation in Germany shows that the reality in this country is different:

  • Developing innovative cases is not trivial: Data-driven innovations are currently not an issue for three quarters of German companies
  • For 37 percent of decision-makers, good data quality is one of the greatest challenges in data management
  • 66 percent of organizations see the cloud as the central solution for all data issues

In December 2020, IDC surveyed IT and specialist decision-makers from 261 organizations with more than 100 employees in Germany and obtained detailed insights into the implementation plans, challenges and success factors in storage, data management and data governance.

Unrestrained data growth

According to estimates by IDC, the global amount of data will grow to 2024 zettabytes by 143. Almost a third of the companies surveyed in Germany recorded annual data growth of between 31 and 60 percent, and a further 6 percent even significantly more. This is data from existing and new workloads as well as from the use of additional data sources and data types. This very dynamic and heterogeneous data environment requires new solutions in companies. “The growing amount of data and the variety of data are both a blessing and a curse. The great business potential of data can hardly be tapped with the existing solutions and processes, and data-driven business models are therefore a long way off in this country. However, no decision-maker can afford that, ”explains Matthias Zacher, Senior Consulting Manager and Project Manager. The result is inadequate data quality. For 37 percent of those surveyed, ensuring high data quality is one of the main challenges.

Flexible storage is the foundation

The growth in data leads to an increased need for storage and, as a result, efficient and cost-effective access to the data. For almost a third of the respondents, new data sources and growing amounts of data in existing sources are the main reasons for more storage. The demand for cloud-based storage solutions is currently increasing disproportionately, and that is unsurprisingly for both primary and secondary workloads. All-flash arrays are becoming increasingly popular. In the medium term, IDC estimates that IT organizations will rely on different solutions, with a growing dominance of cloud-based and hybrid approaches. In this way, companies improve their flexibility and agility in the long term, and thus their ability to react to changes in the market and to unexpectedly complex situations such as the corona pandemic.

More and more data is migrating to the cloud

The cloud is continuously developing into an integral part of the IT landscape. Many IT and specialist decision-makers in all industries, in medium-sized companies and in large companies have defined the cloud as a part or core element of their modernization strategy and are using it with growing success in more and more business areas. This has significant implications for data usage. Those responsible for data expect, on the one hand, solutions for data management and data analysis from cloud-native workloads and, on the other hand, suitable tools for data use in the widely used hybrid scenarios. The path to the cloud is increasingly mapped out. Two thirds of those surveyed already see the cloud as the central instance for all data issues - a point of view that corresponds to IDC's assessments.
