The risk of a cyber attack depends on the industry. This is confirmed by the current survey “Cybersecurity in Numbers” by G DATA in cooperation with Statista and brand eins. In the opinion of the respondents, in addition to banks and financial service providers, the government, research and technology as well as business and trade are among the sectors at risk.

According to a recent study, banks and financial service providers are particularly at risk when it comes to IT security. More than 48 percent of those surveyed rate the financial sector as particularly risky. Sectors with a particular risk also include: government (38 percent), research and technology (29 percent), and business and trade (25 percent). This is the result of the current study "Cybersecurity in Numbers" by G DATA CyberDefense, Statista and brand eins. The industries that are hardly at risk include: craft, education and the automotive industry.

Banks, researchers & retail in focus

"Cyber criminals specifically seek out industries that have large and unique data sets," says Tim Berghoff, Security Evangelist at G DATA CyberDefense. “If you manage to compromise the network, you use this in several ways. They encrypt the critical data and demand a ransom for decryption. At the same time, the attackers threaten to publish the data and cause additional damage. In addition, they use the captured data for further attack attempts. "

Older people are more pessimistic about industries

It is noticeable that the assessment of the risk situation strongly depends on the age of the respondents. 55 percent of older people (65 years and older) consider banks and financial services to be particularly at risk. For younger people (under 30 years of age) it is only 36 percent. The generations also differ significantly in other sectors such as government, business and trade.
