The increasing flood of data increases the attack surface of companies and makes it increasingly difficult for IT managers to protect them from cyberattacks. A study examined the challenges posed by cyber risks.
In the new study, "The State of Data Security: The Journey to Securing an Uncertain Future," Rubrik Zero Labs provides an up-to-date look at the increasingly common challenges posed by cyberattacks and the difficulty of securing data across a company's expanding attack surface. New technologies continue to create endless opportunities for modern cybersecurity threats, according to more than 1.600 IT security leaders. These technologies range from artificial intelligence (AI) to the cloud and take advantage of the rapid increase in global data volumes.
The global flood of data is constantly increasing
- Globally, a typical company's data volume has increased by 18 percent in the last 42 months. As the Zero Labs Report (2023) shows, SaaS data is experiencing the greatest growth (145 percent), followed by cloud data (73 percent) and on-premises data (20 percent).
- On average, a typical organization's data volume is 240 backend terabytes (BETB). Three Rubrik-protected companies even report more than a petabyte of data in backend storage.
- Zero Labs predicts that the total volume of data a typical organization needs to secure will increase by almost 100 BETB next year - and by seven times over the next five years.
With growth, companies are struggling to protect their sensitive data from cyberattacks
- Global companies store an average of 24,8 million sensitive records.
60 percent of the companies surveyed in Germany store their sensitive data in multiple locations in cloud, on-premises and SaaS environments, with less than 3 percent specifying a specific storage location for sensitive data. - More than half (53 percent) of organizations surveyed worldwide have suffered a significant loss of sensitive data in the last year. German companies had the fewest losses (27 percent). Nevertheless, around one in six organizations (worldwide: 16 percent, Germany: 15 percent) reported multiple data losses in 2022.
- The types of data most commonly compromised in Germany included intellectual property (47 percent), authentication data (41 percent) and company financial data (24 percent).
Growing demands on data security require improved data policies
- 48 percent of the IT and IT security executives surveyed at German companies believe that the current data growth in their company exceeds their ability to protect this data from cyberattacks and manage risks.
- Almost all (98 percent) organizations surveyed in Germany believe that they are currently having significant difficulties with data transparency.
- 45 percent of German respondents suspect that people within their company are accessing data even though they are violating data guidelines.
- 43 percent of organizations surveyed have designated a single executive responsible for data and its security.
“Explosive data growth results from the increasing use of big data combined with artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things and the increasing use of personal data generated by devices. Furthermore, it is rapidly changing both sides of the cybersecurity fronts. This includes the countless ways cyberattacks are carried out and how our systems can perform rapid responses – from posture management to data security,” explains Steven Stone, Head of Rubrik Zero Labs. “We see that today’s increase in data, if left unaddressed, can cripple businesses. Organizations need the right insight into their data to secure it and a clear cyber resilience plan to ensure business continuity.”
The methodology of the study
“The State of Data Security: The Journey to Securing an Uncertain Future” by Rubrik Zero Labs was commissioned by Rubrik and conducted by Wakefield Research among more than 1.600 IT and IT security decision makers at organizations with 500 or more employees. It is the third global study since Rubrik Zero Labs was founded a year ago. About half of the respondents were CIOs and CISOs and half were VPs and Directors of IT and Security. The study was conducted in Germany, the USA, Great Britain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Japan, Australia, Singapore and India between June 30, 2023 and July 11, 2023.
The survey is complemented by examining Rubrik's telemetry data from more than 5.000 customers across 22 industries and 67 countries. The data includes over 35 exabytes of secured logical storage and more than 24 billion sensitive records from January 2022 to July 2023.
