Trend Micro Study: Four Challenges for Cloud Migration in Healthcare. Trend Micro survey shows that rapid migration can negatively impact security.
A study by Trend Micro, the world's leading provider of cloud security, found that healthcare companies around the world are spending more and more on cloud migration. At the same time, however, many companies could overestimate their own ability to protect the new cloud environment.
2.500 IT decision-makers interviewed
Trend Micro hired Sapio Research to survey more than 2.500 IT decision-makers from various industries in 28 countries - including healthcare. The results show that 88 percent of global healthcare companies accelerated their cloud migration due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Remote working, cost savings and improved IT agility are the three main reasons for switching to a cloud-based infrastructure.
However, moving quickly to the cloud can put businesses at greater risk from cyber threats. According to the survey, healthcare institutions face four main challenges when migrating to the cloud:
- Skills shortage: 43 percent stated that the lack of qualified employees and know-how is a permanent obstacle to the integration of security solutions in the cloud.
- Daily operation: Defining and complying with security guidelines (34 percent), patching and vulnerability management (32 percent) and misconfigurations (32 percent) are important challenges in protecting cloud workloads.
- Rising costs: 43 percent of companies have spent more on investments and external services since migrating, while 39 percent have seen an increase in operating and training costs.
- Security responsibility: Only 40 percent are certain that they are fulfilling their share of the model of shared responsibility.
Although a cloud migration is not an easy undertaking, it can be implemented and improved with the right security tools.
Security features also support
“Security is one of several aspects of a successful migration project and cannot be viewed in isolation. Ultimately, security functions can help IT managers to develop better in the cloud, ”says Dirk Arendt, Head of Government, Public and Healthcare at Trend Micro Germany. “The development of cloud-native applications can be accelerated with the help of security. The key to this is having the right tools and an understanding of the platforms used. "
The healthcare sector is at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19 and digital transformation can have a positive impact on industry productivity and patient care during this critical time. However, it is important that the broader attack surface that arises with digitization is duly taken into account.
Cloud-ready solutions for healthcare companies
With the right cloud-enabled solutions, healthcare companies can take advantage of the cloud without endangering business-critical systems or patient data. Such tools can also counteract the skills shortage in healthcare by detecting misconfigurations, automating patching and policy management, and making security an integral part of application development - both in cloud and on-premises environments.
