Cisco has announced that Webex now has full data residency in the EU. This satisfies the concerns and even complaints of German data protection officers. Content generated by European customers now resides in data centers in the EU. Existing data will be transferred.

Cisco is consistently pursuing the path of data protection and data security. Wendy Mars, President of Cisco EMEA, announced in a blog that from now on all data from new Webex customers will be processed and stored entirely in data centers in the EU. This means that invoice data and analysis data, for example, now remain in the EU. Since July 2021, Webex has been storing all content generated by European customers in data centers located in the EU.

Now data protection is fulfilled

At the beginning of the year, for example, the Berlin data protection authority classified the use of Webex at the Free University of Berlin as illegal. The reason given at the time was that "Cisco has not yet ended the illegal transmission of personal data to the USA - as far as the data protection officer can tell from the outside - and that an order processing contract that does not comply with the law is being used". Cisco has now met these requirements and should then probably stand up to another test.

"The Frankfurt and Amsterdam data centers serve our customers' strong desire for data residency for Webex solutions within the EU," said Wendy Mars, president of Cisco EMEA. The data of existing customers will also be completely migrated to the EU data centers in Frankfurt and Amsterdam in the course of 2022. Customers can view their migration plan for moving all remaining data to the EU in Webex Control Hub.

Digital sovereignty of Germany

"Our new offer will significantly strengthen Germany's digital sovereignty. Our customers want this maximum flexibility and we deliver,” explains Uwe Peter, head of Cisco Germany. "With the full EU data residency, we enable the independent, self-determined and secure use of digital technologies for our daily life and work in a hybrid work world." The Webex data center in Frankfurt is connected to a second data center in Amsterdam to provide backup, to ensure reliability and availability.
