The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) expects unusually strong DDoS attacks (Distributed Denial of Service) on online platforms on the Black Friday (26.11.21/29.11.21/XNUMX) and Cyber Monday (XNUMX/XNUMX/XNUMX) campaign days as well as during the Christmas business .

The BSI therefore advises online retailers and organizations in the e-commerce sector in particular to prepare suitable countermeasures. The BSI has published a cyber security warning for this purpose and recommends not responding to any attempts at extortion.

Comment BSI President Schönbohm

“In the past few weeks we have observed DDoS attacks with up to 21,8 million requests per second (MRPS). This corresponds to an increase of 28 percent compared to previously measured values. It is to be feared that the attack technologies will also be used in the busy days, especially for DDoS extortion. Previous protective measures against DDoS attacks should therefore be adapted to the new capacities of cyber criminals. This is precisely where it becomes clear how important preventive measures are in the area of IT security. Information security is the prerequisite for successful digitization. "

DDoS attacks: Almost 30 percent increase

DDoS attacks lead to an overload of the attacked IT infrastructures. These are then initially no longer available and customers cannot access the pages. Attacks like these can usually be countered with suitable countermeasures. This requires preventive measures and the selection of suitable IT service providers. The BSI has published corresponding recommendations with its warning notices.

For DDoS attacks, for example, infected home routers, unprotected servers and systems compromised by Trojans can be illegally used by the attackers. Also in the recently published report on the IT security situation in Germany informs the BSI of the increasing threat from DDoS attacks.
