For more protection for consumers and companies: BSI President Schönbohm presents the first "IT security label" for routers to LANCOM. With the IT Security Act 2.0 (IT-SiG 2.0), the BSI was commissioned in 2021 to introduce a voluntary IT security label.
The German network infrastructure and security supplier LANCOM Systems was the first manufacturer to have twenty of its broadband routers awarded the BSI's "IT security label". With the IT Security Act 2.0 (IT-SiG 2.0), the BSI was commissioned in 2021 to introduce a voluntary IT security label in order to create transparency for consumers: the label makes the basic security properties of digital products recognizable at a glance. The first IT security label for broadband routers was presented to LANCOM Systems on May 17, 2022 by BSI President Arne Schönbohm.
The security of the network infrastructure plays a decisive role in defending against cyber risks: Industrial spies and cyber criminals look for weak points here in order to use them for attacks. According to the BSI, routers in particular represent a sensitive possible target for attacks.
From now on, twenty current LANCOM broadband routers, including the devices from the LANCOM 1700 and LANCOM 1800 series, will have an individual BSI IT security label.
New label for more protection
The IT security mark is a voluntary label for IT products. It offers manufacturers the opportunity to meet consumers' increasing need for information. The security properties of IT products are based on a BSI mark to recognize quickly. As a result, the products are particularly highlighted on the market. Manufacturers declare that the respective product is equipped with certain security features that are based on the requirements of relevant IT security standards. The submitted manufacturer's declaration is checked for plausibility by the BSI as part of the application. After the label has been issued, the BSI randomly and ad hoc checks whether the requirements are met over the term.
The IT security label is also linked to information on the BSI website, which informs users about the security properties of the products and also points out possible current security problems and security updates as well as recommendations for action.
Identify security features of IT products
“With the BSI security label, consumers can easily recognize the security properties of IT products. In this way, the label also contributes to raising awareness and increased awareness of IT security in society. We are proud to be the first manufacturer of broadband routers to make our promise in the IT security of our products transparent with the help of the IT security label," says LANCOM CTO Christian Schallenberg.
BSI President Arne Schönbohm adds: “The IT security label is an important building block for more information security and consumer protection. It enables citizens to see at a glance when manufacturers promise to comply with certain security requirements. This promotes transparency and trust in the consumer market.”
