BSI digital barometer: 31% know nothing about cyber threats

According to the BSI's 2022 digital barometer, 31% of those surveyed have never heard of security recommendations to protect against online crime. Many of the respondents also work in companies, which recommends preventive security awareness training.

Im BSI digital barometer 2022 shows, as in previous years, that almost a quarter of the Germans surveyed (23%) are not informed about cyber security. Almost a third (31%) state that they have never heard of security recommendations to protect against crime on the Internet. 45%, on the other hand, are aware of such recommendations and usually implement them in part or in full.

Employees are not familiar with security

In addition to online shopping fraud, unauthorized access to an online account, malware and identity theft, phishing is one of the most frequently mentioned criminal activities that the respondents came into contact with.

“The results of the BSI survey make it clear once again how important it is to continuously train employees, to present preventive measures and to implement them consistently. Cyber criminals use their ingenuity to lure company employees and gain access to the network. Particular vigilance is required for various shopping events, such as last Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and generally for Christmas shopping.”

The untrained don't recognize phishing

The rapid development of attack methods, such as phishing, is becoming increasingly difficult to detect for the untrained eye. The attacker can convincingly disguise the email or text message as a trusted source, e.g. B. as a website of a social network, a bank or a shop. A recent trend is creating fake third-party applications in order to mislead users by redirecting them to seemingly legitimate platforms and applications. Cyber criminals use a variety of methods to do this, including fake discount codes, requests to verify personal information, notifications about payment problems, and even sending fake invoices.

Training as a security component

While internal compliance requirements for reporting phishing or other security breaches vary from organization to organization, employee responsiveness is critical to the entire organization and the data it protects in order to contain a threat. People are still a popular gateway, but with recurring correct training measures they are an integral part of a company's security strategy against these cyber attacks," says Karl Heuser, Account Manager Security DACH at NETSCOUT.
