The latest Bitglass Insider Threat Report states: 61 percent of all companies were exposed to insider attacks. Even in the pandemic crisis, 73 percent do not increase their security budget.
Cloud security provider Bitglass has published its Insider Threat Report 2020. Bitglass worked with a leading cybersecurity community to survey IT professionals around the world to find out how companies handle privacy and budgeting issues with insider threats.
New challenges with insider threats
Careless employees or those who are up to evil pose a significant risk for companies: The majority of the companies surveyed (61 percent) reported at least one insider attack in the past twelve months. A proportion of 22 percent of those surveyed even experienced six or more attacks. Organizations are undergoing fundamental changes, including the rapid transition to the cloud and the widespread adoption of policies for teleworking and the use of personal, unmanaged devices. Combined with protecting against insider threats, this poses greater challenges. Most organizations cannot guarantee that they will be able to detect insider threats emanating from personal devices (82 percent) or the cloud (50 percent), while 81 percent find it difficult to assess the impact of insider threats.
There is a lack of transparency in security measures
Only a few companies have platforms with which all interactions can be recorded centrally. If different stand-alone solutions are used, each with a different type of protection, security professionals will have to spend more time managing each of these tools. According to 49 percent of those surveyed, at least a week usually passes before insider attacks are detected. Forty-four percent also said it usually takes another week for the company to recover from the attacks.
Resources are limited
Even before the pandemic, companies had to cope with limited security budgets. And now the security teams are being encouraged to do even more with less. 73 percent of companies have not planned to increase their security budget for the coming year or are even planning to reduce it.
"Companies report that the loss of critical data and business interruption are the worst effects of insider attacks," said Anurag Kahol, CTO of Bitglass. “In addition to damage to the brand, restoration costs, liability for damages and loss of sales, these are serious consequences that must be avoided. Organizations need a versatile security platform that can monitor user behavior, protect personal devices, ensure maximum uptime, achieve cost savings, and prevent data loss associated with interactions. Only then can they fend off insider threats. ”The full report with all the results is available for download online from Bitglass.
