Passwordless fingerprint authentication via smart card

The new SafeNet IDPrime FIDO Bio Smart Card provides a simple, secure and fast way for users to access applications using only their fingerprint. This provides companies with a passwordless, phishing-resistant authentication solution.

Thales' SafeNet IDPrime FIDO Bio Smart Card is a security key that enables strong multi-factor authentication (MFA) for businesses. This new contactless smart card allows users to quickly and securely access corporate devices, applications and cloud services by using a fingerprint instead of a password.

Stolen logins responsible for every second attack

According to the 2023 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report, the top three methods attackers use to gain access to an organization are stolen credentials, phishing, and exploiting vulnerabilities. In fact, 49 percent of all security breaches involved stolen credentials. Given these threats, many organizations moving to the cloud struggle with low user adoption of MFA, often described as cumbersome.

The SafeNet IDPrime FIDO Bio Smart Card makes it easier for the end user to adopt passwordless MFA by allowing them to easily register and authenticate with biometric data. Instead of a password, users can log in with a fingerprint via the sensor on the card. The smart cards also support contactless features, allowing users to simply tap the card on any NFC-enabled device. For business users, this smart card offers numerous advantages, including more speed, more security and more convenience than traditional passwords.

Phishing powerless on smart card security key

By using these security keys, users can be assured of strong protection against account takeover and phishing on corporate devices. The user's biometric data is securely stored in the card's chip and never leaves the smart card itself, ensuring a high level of data protection. This solution can be used for all digital assets that support the FIDO2 standard, including Windows, Mac, Linux and more.

Thales is a market leader in biometrics and has already demonstrated success with contactless biometric payment cards in highly regulated sectors. The SafeNet IDPrime FIDO Bio Smart Card expands the existing portfolio of FIDO security keys and now also offers corporate customers the same secure biometric functions.

Passwordless: Less responsibility for the employee

Danny de Vreeze, VP Identity & Access Management Products at Thales: “The human factor continues to be a major challenge in modern companies, as the attack surface for many companies increases as workplaces move remotely and to the cloud. Adopting MFA is a common hurdle in ensuring security, as many users find it cumbersome and choose to bypass it. The SafeNet IDPrime FIDO Bio Smart Card helps solve this challenge by introducing a physical form factor that increases security while providing a fast and seamless user experience. Complementing a strong portfolio of FIDO-supported security keys and solutions, this product is a pioneer in phishing-resistant authentication.”
