Survey: Cloud security worries security professionals

Cloud security is a top concern for cybersecurity professionals right now, according to a survey by Delinea, a leading provider of seamless security Privileged Access Management (PAM) solutions.

At this year's RSA Conference in San Francisco, more than 100 security professionals were interviewed about their current biggest problems and their cyber hygiene practices. For 37 percent of those surveyed, securing the cloud (cloud security) is the main cause for concern, followed by ransomware (19 percent) and a distributed workforce (17 percent).

Poll at RSA Conference

"Protecting digital assets in the cloud is becoming the number one priority, demonstrating a more proactive approach to cybersecurity," said Joseph Carson, Chief Security Scientist and Advisory CISO at Delinea. “As organizations increasingly rely on the cloud for infrastructure, application development, and business process automation, security capabilities and solutions must also keep up. It is all the more important to secure privileged access to cloud infrastructures and workloads before attackers compromise them.”

Many companies are already on the right track, as the survey results show: 80 percent of those surveyed were able to report that their company had not suffered a cyber attack in the last 12 months. This positive development is probably due to increased cyber hygiene among employees, especially when it comes to handling passwords and being careful with authentication. For example, 59 percent of respondents said they don't share passwords across accounts, and nearly two-thirds (66 percent) now use strong multi-factor authentication (MFA) whenever it's available.

Passwords and critical systems

“Passwords should never be the only security control for access to critical systems, applications and permissions. Implementing MFA controls adds an additional layer of protection, guaranteeing security should an attacker manage to compromise a password,” adds Carson. "MFA should not only be required for system login, but also for horizontal and vertical authorization expansion."

When asked about their incident response skills and how they deal with cyber incidents, it became clear that cyber insurance is playing an increasingly important role: 41 percent of those surveyed said that their company had already taken out special cyber insurance or was considering taking out insurance.
