The new REDDOXX study confirms the status of e-mail: only one in eight uses encrypted e-mails. 93% of the respondents definitely do not see an obsolete model in the e-mail.

Email remains an important communication medium. Spam is still a problem. And e-mail encryption is certainly considered to be sensible - but there is no lack of reasons for not encrypting it after all. These are some of the central results of a new study by REDDOXX on the “Status of e-mail in Germany”, in which 1.087 full-time employees were surveyed.

E-mail use mainly for work

E-mail is discontinued? 92% of those questioned see it very differently. Because they are of the opinion that e-mails will continue to be an important means of communication in the future. E-mail is often used, especially in professional life: More than one in three sends over 50 professional e-mails per week. Many people still experience unsolicited advertising mail in the form of spam as a nuisance in their inbox. Whether an unexpected inheritance of millions from abroad or supposed miracle pills - almost one in three (31%) perceives spam as a very big problem.

Email encryption: important, but too complicated for many

When it comes to email encryption, many prejudices still dominate. Around 40% of those questioned find the encryption of e-mails to be far too complicated and also not widespread enough. It is therefore not surprising that more than half (56%) do without it completely - women (62%) even somewhat more often than men (53%). In return, only just under 13% state that they frequently use encrypted e-mails. The importance of encryption is well recognized: 93% are even of the opinion that it is important not only for companies but also for private individuals.

“Even if messenger services and collaboration tools are spreading more and more, almost no one can imagine a working life without emails at the moment,” says Christian Schröder from REDDOXX. “That makes it all the more important, however, to use the medium of e-mail securely. Encryption is still often struggling with the prejudice that it is only for experienced IT professionals. Many also rely purely on the communication partner: every second person simply does not encrypt because they do not offer an appropriate solution. "

Methodology of the study
