Sophos takes over Capsule8 and integrates the security technology for Linux server and cloud containers into its Adaptive Cybersecurity Ecosystem (ACE). The acquisition expands the Sophos portfolio for detection and response solutions and services in the area of inadequately protected server and cloud environments.

Sophos, a global leader in next-generation cybersecurity, announces the acquisition of Capsule8. The company acts as a pioneer and market leader for runtime transparency as well as detection & response for Linux production servers and containers that cover on-premise and cloud capacities. Capsule8 was founded in New York in 2016 and is privately owned.

Server security business: growing 20 percent per year

"Sophos already protects more than two million servers for over 85.000 customers worldwide and our server security business is growing at more than 20 percent per year," said Dan Schiappa, Chief Product Officer at Sophos. “Comprehensive server protection is a critical component of any effective cybersecurity strategy that businesses of all sizes are increasingly focusing on. This is especially true as more and more workloads move to the cloud. With the Capsule8 acquisition, Sophos is integrating advanced, differentiated solutions for the protection of server environments into its portfolio and further expanding its position as a leading global provider of cybersecurity. "

Linux security development

Capsule8 is exclusively dedicated to the development of Linux security, has established itself as an innovative technology leader in the market and recorded sales growth of 31% in the fiscal year ended March 2021, 77. Driven by the strong growth in cloud platforms, Linux has become the dominant operating system for server workloads. The powerful yet resource-efficient design of Capsule8 is ideal for Linux servers, especially those used for high-scale workloads, production infrastructures and the storage of critical business data.

Integration into Adaptive Cybersecurity Ecosystem (ACE)

Sophos integrates Caspule8 technology into its recently introduced Adaptive Cybersecurity Ecosystem (ACE) and offers high-performance Linux server and cloud container security within this open platform. The technology is also used in the following solutions: Sophos Extended Detection and Response (XDR), Sophos Intercept X Server Protection, Sophos Managed Threat Response (MTR) and Sophos Rapid Response. In addition, by integrating Caspule8 solutions, Sophos is further expanding its data lake, which, as an extensive and constantly growing data collection, is the basis for advanced threat hunting.

Detection & Response platform for Linux

“Caspule8 is the first specially developed detection & response platform for Linux. We offer security teams the transparency they need to protect Linux production infrastructures from unwanted access while keeping an eye on costs, performance and reliability, ”said John Viega, CEO of Capsule8. “We have developed new approaches to provide runtime security much more safely and cheaply than anyone else in the industry. With Caspule8 technology, companies are no longer forced to choose between system stability and security risk. With the growth and often business-critical importance of Linux environments, as well as the rapidly changing, targeted threat landscape, companies need to be confident that their Linux environments are both powerful and secure. "

Linux servers more and more in the crosshairs

Linux servers are an increasingly popular target for attackers who use the compromised platforms as crypto-mining botnets or who abuse them as high-end infrastructure to launch attacks on other platforms. Since Linux servers often contain valuable data, attackers are increasingly targeting data theft and ransomware attacks. The SophosLabs threat analyzes show that attackers develop special tactics for Linux systems and often use server software as the first entry point.
