Security trends: will cyber threats also be dominated by the corona pandemic in 2021? Which campaign paid off for hackers? ESET experts provide the answers.

Everyday life for many people has changed massively as a result of the corona pandemic, and it will initially remain that way in 2021. The term digitization is no longer an empty phrase, but a lived reality. In many cases, IT security was left out of the equation when it came to rapid implementation, for example when it came to mobile working. This must finally be improved so that the digital GAU in 2021 does not materialize. The health system in particular is particularly at risk here. Cyber criminals have identified this industry as a lucrative target. In order not to endanger the processes and thus human life, hospitals pay ransom more often than other companies. ESET security experts expect massive attacks with ransomware in 2021. The ESET security experts have summarized what cyber threats await other companies and private users in 2021 on WeliveSecurity.

Health care was poorly prepared

“2020 stands for one year in crisis mode. Profound decisions had to be made quickly. Mobile working was suddenly a defining topic. People were poorly prepared for the pandemic not only in the world of work, but also in health care and the school sector, ”says Thomas Uhlemann, ESET Security Specialist.

“In 2021, IT security must urgently be incorporated into the new reality! Digitization received a massive boost in 2020 - now it is important to secure the processes and understand IT security as a cornerstone for future planning. "

Ransomware and healthcare

Targeted ransomware attacks are an integral part of cybercriminals' arsenals. Hospitals, resident doctors and pharmaceutical companies in particular will be the focus of hackers in 2021. Hospitals are already working to the limit and have become a lucrative target for criminals this year. ESET security experts expect massive attacks on this industry in 2021. The pressure to pay ransom is particularly high here, because human lives are at stake.

Home office, but safe!

2021 will be the decisive year for many companies, not just financially. The sometimes hasty digitization of operational processes has opened the infrastructures of many companies like barn doors. The effective protection of the decentralized structures and the topic of IT security often fell by the wayside. It is now necessary to make improvements in order to secure the company networks. Topics such as multi-factor authentication and encryption must be given top priority.
