Industrial Security OT IT Smart Factories

Trend Micro extends the protection of smart factories with a unique industrial IPS array to protect large industrial networks. Advanced network segmentation keeps threats to business-critical systems at bay.

Trend Micro today announced the first intent-based and intelligent IPS array for industrial environments. The focus is on protecting large industrial networks from critical attacks while reducing costs.

The EdgeIPS Pro developed by TXOne Networks is specially designed for the needs of manufacturing companies in industries such as automotive and semiconductor manufacturing worldwide that operate centrally managed or highly automated factories with multiple production lines. EdgeIPS Pro is part of Trend Micro's comprehensive security suite for intelligent factories and covers all levels: Starting with comprehensive perimeter protection for the cloud, to corporate IT, on-site manufacturing operations, to monitoring and control levels.

IT and OT convergence in smart factories

The IT and OT convergence in smart factories has not only brought tremendous productivity benefits, but has also increased cybersecurity risks from malware infections and unauthorized access. Due to the flat network architecture and the associated vulnerability to attacks, an entire production process can come to a complete standstill. Appropriate solutions for network security, including network segmentation, must enable both an increase in productivity and guarantee efficient security.

On the one hand, IT network security solutions are nowhere near as adaptable, especially when it comes to supporting industrial network protocols, as the OT requires. On the other hand, existing industrial network security solutions often struggle with central manageability when security guidelines for hundreds of systems and networks have to be managed and rolled out individually.

Trend Micro's smart factory security solution

"As we are facing a constantly changing digital landscape, the successful convergence of IT and OT is now business-critical," said Udo Schneider, IoT Security Evangelist Europe at Trend Micro. “The addition of EdgeIPS Pro as an integral part of Trend Micro's smart factories security solution is a milestone in protecting large industrial networks in manufacturing. The IT-friendly provision and administration enables companies to ensure ongoing operations while at the same time fending off threats. "

EdgeIPS Pro is a transparent, intent-based, industrial, intelligent IPS array based on TX One-Pass Deep Packet Inspection (TXODI ™) technology. This enables network segmentation thanks to firewall, IPS and protocol filter functions including support for industrial network protocols. This eliminates the need to change the network configuration of existing systems, which also minimizes deployment costs. At the same time, this enables efficient and centralized management for large industrial networks with Gen3 hardware bypass for 48 or 96 ports in an easy-to-implement IT rack form factor.

A lack of network segmentation makes it easier for malware to spread

“The lack of network segmentation is the most common problem in the control layer that enables malware to spread. Segmenting such networks is a real challenge in ICS environments, as they require a deep understanding of industrial network protocols, ”said Dr. Terence Liu, General Manager of TXOne Networks. "With EdgeIPS Pro, administrators can organize network segmentation based on business intent."
