There has been a significant increase in cybersecurity incidents over the past year, according to the Verizon 2021 Data Breach Investigations Report. One reason could be the increase in homeworking. A comment from the 8com Cyber Defense Center.

The Verizon 2021 Data Breach Investigations Report recorded a record number of security incidents around the world for the past year. The study just published clearly shows that cyber crime has increased massively during the corona pandemic. A total of 29.258 incidents from 83 participating institutions worldwide were investigated. 5.258 of these events were confirmed security breaches. Compared to the 3.950 security breaches in the previous year, a significant increase can be observed.

Broken down by economic zones, there is a number of 5.379 incidents for the Europe-Arabia-Africa (EMEA) area, in which 293 cases of data theft occurred. Attacks on web applications, system intrusions and social engineering made up 83 percent of the events. Also in 83 percent of the cases the threat came from outside, only 18 percent were insiders. In terms of motives, the study found that the lion's share of attacks (89 percent) were financially motivated. Eight percent of the cases involved espionage and 8 percent of the attackers acted for fun or revenge.

Home office responsible for more attacks

According to the study's authors, a major factor in the increase in security-related cyber incidents was the relocation of work to the home office in the past year. Globally, the number of phishing attacks increased by 11 percent and the number of ransomware attacks increased by 6 percent. In addition, it found that cases of misrepresentation were 15 times more common than the year before. In 61 percent of the analyzed cases, authorization data was compromised and in 85 percent the human factor played a role. The fast, and therefore not always flawless, relocation of data to the cloud has also been massively exploited by cyber criminals. Attacks on web applications made up 39 percent of all security incidents.

The finance and insurance industries are often compromised

Another focus of the analysis is the way in which various industries are hit by cyberattacks. One example is the finance and insurance industry. 83 percent of the cases involved personal data that had been compromised. In other industries, such as scientific and technical services, this was only the case in just under half.
