The statistics with recorded attack attempts show that ESET has already blocked hundreds of thousands of attacks on servers related to Log4j / Log4Shell. Most of the attack attempts take place in the USA - Germany is in fourth place, as an interactive map shows.
ESET has further analyzed the attempted attacks on IT systems that target the Log4j / Log4Shell security gap. ESET researchers still consider the vulnerability to be highly problematic as many computers have still not received the required security updates. ESET therefore assumes that the Log4Shell vulnerability will pose an immense risk in the coming year.
Why will Log4j / Log4Shell be a security problem for a long time?
Even years four years after the EternalBlue vulnerability and attacks using WannaCry, ESET is still seeing unprotected servers and successful attacks that successfully exploit the vulnerability at the time.
In the last few days, ESET has detected hundreds of thousands of attempted attacks around the world that can be traced back to the critical Log4Shell vulnerability. Most of the attack attempts take place in the USA, Great Britain, Turkey, Germany and the Netherlands, but a total of almost 180 countries are under attack. This shows the global proliferation of the Log4j software library in systems around the world.
ESET offers an interactive map with current telemetry data. There is also a diagram with a country ranking.
