We can start: For the first two product categories “broadband router” and “e-mail services”, manufacturers can now submit an application to the BSI for an IT security label to be issued. With the logo, companies should be able to recognize more quickly whether they are products that have been tested.

All information about what is needed for a successful application can be found on the application page. In particular, the applicant must provide an assurance that he has checked the underlying requirements for his product or service and that he has fulfilled them. If the evidence is plausible, it will be issued. As soon as all the necessary documents are available, the application process must be completed by the BSI within six weeks.

Apply for an IT security label

Arne Schönbohm, President of the BSI: “I am very pleased that the application process for the IT security label is opened today. The well over 100 discussions with associations, companies and civil society in recent months have once again shown a keen interest in this label, which is intended to offer consumers guidance on the digital market in the future. We have made the application process as straightforward as possible and are always available for questions and suggestions.

The more frequently the IT security label is used, the easier, faster and more broadly we can bring important security information from individual devices to people. When it comes to cyber security, it's all about being able to respond quickly. Our information can help to close security gaps in everyday digital devices quickly and reliably. The IT security label is a visible symbol for an important message: Information security is the prerequisite for successful digitization! "

Further product and service categories will follow

After the IT security label has been issued, the BSI market surveillance system at the Freital site, made possible by IT SiG 2.0, checks compliance with the requirements for individual products without any reason (e.g. through random samples). If weaknesses in products with a security label become known, the BSI checks the information, contacts the manufacturer and provides the consumers with relevant information on the website associated with the label. The BSI is planning to open the IT security label to other categories in the near future.
