In the event of a ransomware attack, some insurance companies offer damage payments for the ransom money demanded to insured companies. This insurance protection is now up for discussion among politicians in the fight against ransomware actors. If the companies do not receive any damage payments from the insurance companies, they are less willing to pay the required ransom - the cybercriminals' business model loses its foundation.
Current Kaspersky analyzes show that ransomware is still a major problem for companies. From January to November 2021, almost every second security incident (46,7 percent) processed by Kaspersky's Global Emergency Response Team was ransomware-related. This corresponds to an increase of almost 12 percentage points compared to 2020.
Ransomware attacks will increase by 2021 percent in 12
“We started talking about what is known as Ransomware 2020 in 2.0 and this year we have seen this new era of ransomware come into full force. Ransomware operators don't just encrypt data; they steal information from critical large targets and threaten to publish it if victims don't pay; and this type of ransomware 2.0 will remain in the coming year. ”Vladimir Kuskov, Head of Threat Exploration at Kaspersky.
Ransomware attackers will refine the attacks
“At the same time, law enforcement agencies are now working to bring down actors as ransomware is making the headlines - that's exactly what happened this year with DarkSide and REvil. The life cycles of these bands are compressed. This means that they will refine their tactics in 2022 in order to remain profitable, especially if governments declare such ransom payments illegal - which is currently under discussion. ”According to Fedor Sinitsyn, security expert at Kaspersky.
