A decryption tool co-developed by Bitdefender is now available to victims of the MegaCortex ransomware family. Those affected can use this free tool to make encrypted data from all MegaCortex versions available again.
As early as October 2021, Europol had reported the arrest of twelve people as a result of an international action against actors who had used ransomware of the Dharma, MegaCortex and LockerGoga types. The victims of the attacks are believed to have included over 1.800 victims in 71 countries. The damage caused was estimated at over 100 million US dollars. Many of the victims kept encrypted data and waited for a decryption tool for a long time. This is now available for free.
Easy use of MegaCortex ransomware decryptor
The Decryptor is available for free download. And it works as simply as this: By clicking on the "Backup" option, files are backed up so that you can start a new attempt in the event of problems. With this option, the user sees both the not yet decrypted and the decrypted files and can easily delete the former later. In addition, a log entry is created for the decryptions. Files that were only partially recovered in previous attempts are replaced with new, cleaned files, which are then successfully decrypted, if the appropriate setting is selected. The tool also works in the background in "silent mode" and can then be controlled via command lines to make files available again in a large network. Users can also enter paths on which encrypted files are located.
Comprehensive ransomware decryption utility
Bitdefender's continued development of one of the industry's most comprehensive ransomware decryption programs has saved many companies from having to pay ransoms - estimated at around $XNUMX billion in total. These include, for example, the decryption tool for victims of Gandcrab attacks and the universal decryptor against REvil ransomware. Last year, Bitdefender – together with the international and Swiss partners involved – also developed a universal decryptor for Lockergoga.
If users are looking for more free decryption tools, these will usually find what they are looking for at the NoMoreRansom association. The information site is an association of international authorities and many security manufacturers. A lot of free decryption tools, instructions and information can be found there. There also finds again a guide to the practical use of the decryptor for the MegaCortex ransomware.
