A new Kaspersky film documents healthcare cybercrime attacks during the Covid-19 pandemic. Kaspersky presents the third film in its "hacker:HUNTER" web series.

Tomorrow Unlocked, the online magazine for technology culture from Kaspersky, publishes the two-part documentary "hacker: HUNTER Ha (ck) cine '". This impressively describes how cyber criminals and state-sponsored hackers attack the health system. The first part will be available exclusively and free of charge on the magazine's YouTube channel from September 25, 2020. The film documentary is the third publication of real cybercrime cases as part of the "hacker: HUNTER" web series.

For cyber criminals, every crisis is an opportunity - even a global pandemic. Over the past few months, the documentary's authors have spoken to hospitals, law enforcement agencies, health organizations and research centers around the world to get a full picture of the extent to which the health system was exposed to cyber threats during the Coronavirus crisis. The conclusion: attacks and malware were increasingly observed. The compromise and subsequent blackmail of the Düsseldorf University Clinic last week clearly shows how real this danger continues to be.

Cyber volunteers for IT security in the healthcare sector

While the global pandemic has sparked a surge in cybercrime, it has also received an incredible response from within the cybersecurity community. Volunteer cybersecurity experts founded CV19 [6], a 3.000-strong group that works tirelessly to help hospitals and health care facilities protect their IT systems free of charge in all areas of care.

hacker: HUNTER Ha (ck) cine: content and production

The documentary "hacker: HUNTER Ha (ck) cine" reveals the alarming increase in cyber attacks on the healthcare system during the global Covid-19 pandemic. He takes viewers to the scene of targeted attacks on the World Health Organization (WHO), which has seen a five-fold increase in cyberattacks since March.

While government-funded hackers are embroiled in a battle over personal medical information, cyber criminals are also taking advantage of the global chaos. Although healthcare was previously targeted, cyberattacks have skyrocketed in the wake of the pandemic. Because: The attackers know that hospitals, for example, are more willing to pay ransom. For example, in March the Czech university clinic in Brno, which is responsible for carrying out a large part of the country's corona tests, was taken as a digital hostage and forced to shut down its IT network - amid the crisis.

Documentaries about real Cybercrime attacks

The film was directed by Didi Mae Hand and produced by Max Peltz. The "hacker: HUNTER" series was created by Hugo Berkeley, who also directed the first two documentaries - about the Carbanak group and the ransomware attack WannaCry.

“I was overwhelmed by the passion and commitment of the cybersecurity community to help the public weather this pandemic. It is impressive what has been done to keep the systems and the free exchange of scientific and medical services running in the face of the enormous challenges and attacks. The willingness of our tireless and high-profile contributors to share their time, experiences and stories, and the talented crew to rise to the challenges of remote shooting, turned a film that would have been difficult to make into a fascinating and rewarding cinematic one Experience transforms ”, says Didi Mae Hand, the director of“ hacker: HUNTER Ha (ck) cine ”enthusiastically. “So much has happened behind the scenes, so I'm excited now that people are watching the film and getting an insight into the incredible work of the cyber community during a really challenging year. We experienced so much solidarity, so much interest from all of our contributors, who really did everything to make this film possible. It was impressive!"

The documentary consists of two 20-minute episodes:

  • "Hacker: HUNTER Ha (ck) cine": Healthcare on the Edge ': The first part, which was published on September 25, 2020, portrays the volunteers and shows how an attack on a hospital during the pandemic can effectively paralyze it.
  • "Hacker: HUNTER Ha (ck) cine": Defending the Cure '. The second part, released on October 2, 2020, reports on attacks on the World Health Organization and research centers when the corona pandemic broke out.

The fourth documentary in the series "hacker: HUNTER" will be released in November. All films that have already been released and the new "hacker: HUNTER" episodes are also available online.
