19 percent: Only so few manufacturing and production companies pay ransom after a ransomware attack in order to free their encrypted data. Far less than the cross-industry average of 32 percent.

The State of Ransomware in Manufacturing and Production 2021 research report by Sophos reveals that at just 19 percent, manufacturing and manufacturing operations are the least likely to give in to a ransomware ransom note in order to decipher their encrypted data. At the same time, at 68 percent, these companies are most likely to be able to restore their data from backups. Nevertheless, this sector is one of the most affected by extortionate ransomware. Cyber criminals not only use encryption of the data as leverage, but also threaten to publish stolen files on the Internet if the victim does not comply with the ransom demand.

Global: 36 percent of companies affected

From a global perspective, 36 percent of the manufacturing and manufacturing companies surveyed were affected by ransomware attacks in the past year. As much as 50 percent of the companies surveyed confirm this for the DACH region. Globally, 89 percent of manufacturing and manufacturing companies have a malware incident recovery plan in place. Companies in the DACH region can even top this average with 92 percent.

The average recovery cost was $ 1,52 million - less than the global median of $ 1,31 million. The results of the analysis also show that companies in these industries are far more worried about a ransomware attack in the future than any other sector: 1,85 percent of the respondents consider the attacks to be so sophisticated that it is becoming increasingly difficult to stop them. For 1,59 percent, ransomware is so widespread that they expect to be affected by it.

The Sophos research report examines the extent and impact of ransomware attacks in 5.400 respondents in senior IT positions in 30 countries (including 438 in manufacturing and manufacturing).
