Security researchers report that cybercriminals are selling tools that allow other hackers to bypass ChatGPT's security restrictions.
As early as March 2023, new malware families were discovered using ChatGPT's name to trick users. The scams are often mobile applications or browser extensions that imitate ChatGPT tools. In some cases, the fake tools even offer some ChatGPT features. However, their ultimate goal is to steal the user's credentials.
AI generated malware
It's also no longer a secret that cyber criminals use ChatGPT to create malware, including infostealers for Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, and image-based targets, as well as deceptive Python programming scripts that perform cryptographic operations (aka encryption tools). Although the strength and functionality of the malware created via ChatGPT is questionable, the prospect that ChatGPT could improve its skills through learning and thereby help generate even more powerful malware poses a real concern.
ChatGPT is also exploited for crypto fraud purposes. For example, hackers repurposed the ChatGPT logo and stole Elon Musk's name to lure victims into crypto promotions. In addition, increasingly sophisticated phishing emails are being created using ChatGPT. In the US, the Federal Trade Commission has already warned that ChatGPT could be used to "speed up" internet fraud. Italy is already trying to block and ban ChatGPT in the country, Germany is also discussing this possibility.
