Federal Office for Information Security certifies SD-WAN gateway from LANCOM Systems. BSI President Schönbohm awards the first "BSZ" security certificate.

The German network infrastructure supplier LANCOM Systems was the first company to receive a security certificate in accordance with the "BSZ" test procedure. With the "Accelerated Security Certification", the BSI is initially addressing manufacturers of network components, as these are of outstanding importance for the defense against IT and cyber security risks. The LANCOM 1900EF, which is used as a VPN or SD-WAN gateway for secure site networking in industry, business, administration and critical infrastructures (KRITIS), was certified. The certificate was presented during a virtual meeting by BSI President Arne Schönbohm.

1. Certificate according to BSZ - Accelerated Security Certification

Network security plays a decisive role in defending against cyber risks: Industrial spies and cyber criminals specifically look for weak points in the infrastructure in order to use them as a starting point for attacks. According to the BSI Management Report 2020, routers and gateways are a sensitive possible target for highly professional APT (Advanced Persistent Threats) groups. Devices with certified security can offer good protection here.

New BSI certification with a high level of practical relevance

Before the certificate was issued, the LANCOM 1900EF had to go through a certification process lasting several months, which was based on extensive conformity and penetration tests and demonstrated the high level of trust in the resistance to attacks. The test procedure is based on practice and aims to evaluate critical products more quickly and make them attractive to a broader target market. The BSZ is compatible with the French CSPN. These two schemes are currently being standardized in Europe and can be incorporated into a future European scheme in accordance with the Cyber Security Act.

Due to its excellent security properties, it is ideally suited for cross-location networking wherever sensitive data is processed - including public authorities and government networks, healthcare, insurers and financial service providers - as well as for protecting companies and systems that are aimed at manipulation, sabotage or know-how -Deduction are.

Important building block for more digital sovereignty

The gateway is developed and manufactured in Germany according to the highest security and data protection standards. Part of the BSZ certificate is an update guarantee as well as the obligation to react promptly to reports on weak points. In addition, as the bearer of the trust mark “IT Security made in Germany”, LANCOM has committed itself to ensuring that its products are backdoor-free and fulfills the high requirements of the amendment to the IT Security Act for the trustworthiness of central IT components in KRITIS. This makes the LANCOM 1900EF an important component for more security, resilience and digital sovereignty in business and administration.

“Economic protection and digital sovereignty have always been elementary goals of LANCOM. The renewed certification by the BSI proves the excellent security level of our products and gives companies and authorities the certainty that their networks are optimally protected. At the same time, we set ourselves apart from the competition: no other manufacturer is currently able to network critical projects with a BSI-certified SD-WAN gateway, ”says LANCOM founder and managing director Ralf Koenzen.

BSI President Arne Schönbohm adds: “Certification is an important component of information security in order to offer administration and business, but also citizens, secure products and services. Certificates create transparency and thus trust. I am delighted that LANCOM is the first company to go through the BSZ with us. "
