New IT Security Act 2.0 paves the way for modern cyber security in Germany. The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) will thus gain new competencies that will significantly strengthen its work as the federal cyber security authority.
“This day is a real milestone for the BSI. The IT Security Act 2.0 paves the way for an improved level of cyber security in Germany. As the federal cyber security authority, we help shape secure digitization in Germany. With our expertise, we help to ensure that innovations are implemented safely, ”says Arne Schönbohm, President of the BSI.
BSI receives more extensive competencies
The IT Security Act gives the BSI more extensive competencies in the detection of security gaps and in the defense against cyber attacks. This strengthens the BSI's legal task of informing, warning and advising those affected and supports the goal of closing security gaps in IT systems as quickly as possible at any time.
Cyber security is also becoming even more important for companies: Operators of critical infrastructures and, in the future, other companies in the special public interest must implement state-of-the-art IT security measures. You will also be included in the trustworthy exchange of information with the BSI. The cyber security level of the economy in Germany will be further increased.
In addition, the requirements for cyber security in mobile networks are being expanded: The law contains a regulation prohibiting the use of critical components if their use is likely to affect public order or security in the Federal Republic of Germany. The network operators must meet specified, high security requirements and critical components must be certified. The law ensures, among other things, information security in 5G cellular networks.

Digital consumer protection is also being strengthened by the IT Security Act and included in the BSI's catalog of tasks. In this way, the BSI will become the independent and neutral advice center for consumers on issues relating to IT security at the federal level.
“We will significantly expand our existing range, warn and inform in the event of dangers, and provide orientation in everyday digital life and with products. In future, a uniform IT security label for consumers should make it clear which products already comply with certain IT security standards. With this orientation offer, we want to go quickly to the consumer market, ”said BSI President Schönbohm.
