The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) has published a publication on cyber security advice for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The brochure offers SMEs an easy-to-understand introduction to improving their cyber security level, because information security is a prerequisite for secure digitization.

The brochure starts with the most important basics of IT security - in a nutshell with 14 questions. Among other things, it provides information on who is responsible for information security in the company, why patches and updates should be installed regularly, why an anti-virus program is necessary and why data backup is so important.

Increased risk for SMEs

Media reports about cyber security incidents in large companies almost every week. However, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have an increased risk of becoming victims of cyber security incidents, since small companies in particular rarely have their own IT team. Knowledge of IT security is very limited within SMEs and usually has to be purchased externally. The publication is intended to help small and medium-sized businesses to better protect themselves against cyber attacks.

Advice when experience is lacking

In addition to the brochure, this BSI a website with developed subpages for security advice for SMEs. For completely inexperienced companies, the Easy Start section offers the opportunity to approach the topic step by step. Basic elements of cyber security are explained. Short explanatory videos then clarify the important basics of information and cyber security. Information follows in the event of an IT security incident and the IT emergency card.
