Barracuda Enhances Cloud Application Protection Platform

Share post

Barracuda extends security capabilities to its Cloud Application Protection Platform. Cloud Application Protection 2.0 leverages machine learning, adds a containerized WAF, and protects web apps from evolving attack vectors.

Cloud security specialist Barracuda Networks has equipped its cloud application protection platform with a significant increase in new protection measures. It is now even easier for companies to secure their applications in a constantly increasing digitized environment using a significantly higher security level. The new services and functions include client-side protection, the ability to implement containerized WAF nodes and an auto-configuration engine. In addition, Cloud Application Protection 2.0 now leverages machine learning, vulnerability scanning and remediation, and advanced threat protection to deliver active threat intelligence for better protection.

New functions and improvements

Cloud Application Protection, Barracuda's Web Application and API Protection (WAAP) platform, now offers the following key features:

  • Client-side protection automatically creates and implements protective measures against website skimming and supply chain attacks such as MageCart. This type of attack is carried out by infecting a script that is loaded directly by the browser, thus preventing WAFs from detecting it. Cloud Application Protection 2.0 offers both protection and reporting functions against these attacks.
  • Containerized WAF deployment offers the same security engine as the Barracuda WAF and WAF-as-a-Service, but in the form of a container. Applications that are increasingly provided in containers can now be protected in this way.
  • Auto-configuration engine uses machine learning to check a company's traffic patterns and make recommendations for tightening security settings. This significantly reduces the administrative effort.
  • Active Threat Intelligence is a cloud-based service supported by machine learning that provides active threat information in near real time so that new threats can be detected and stopped in good time. Barracuda Active Threat Intelligence combines Barracuda Vulnerability Manager, Barracuda Vulnerability Remediation Service, Barracuda Advanced Threat Protection and the cloud level of Barracuda Advanced Bot Protection into a single service that covers the entire cycle from hazard detection to remediation.
  • additionally In addition to these functions, Cloud Application Protection 2.0 adds an Azure Sentinel integration, which makes it possible to understand quickly obtained information in context in order to be able to react quickly. In addition, rules can be created on Azure Sentinel to perform configuration tasks with the WAF API and thus close the feedback loop as soon as newer attacks are detected.

A workbook that sets up an Azure Sentinel workspace with a dashboard specifically for Barracuda WAF or WAF-as-a-Service is now available in the Azure portal and makes it easier for administrators to use the integration.

Cloud Application Protection 2.0

"With Cloud Application Protection 2.0, we have combined the highest level of application security with a high level of usability," said Tim Jefferson, SVP, Engineering for Data, Networks and Application Security at Barracuda. "On the one hand, the powerful new functions address current challenges in terms of application security and, on the other hand, offer a certain future security in terms of the expected development steps of applications."

Barracuda recently interviewed several hundred IT security decision-makers from companies around the world. The top five application security challenges that respondents identified were bots, supply chain attacks, vulnerability detection, API security, and security that slows app development.
