This is at the expense of cybersecurity: 4 out of 10 employees do not pay attention to IT security in the office. In the private sphere, people are more careful with their digital devices - according to the numbers of the week from G DATA.

Around 40 percent of employees neglect the security of their devices in the office. For them, security ends when they turn on their computer. This is confirmed by the current survey “Cybersecurity in Numbers” by G DATA in cooperation with Statista and brand eins. And when working from home, too, many people do not pay attention to IT security.

Employees pay less attention to security in the office

In the private environment, on the other hand, careful handling in the IT area is a big issue for many users. This is what more than 52 percent of those questioned in the “Cybersecurity in Numbers” survey by G DATA CyberDefense, Statista and brand eins said. Although IT security is also important in a professional environment, many do not take it very seriously in the workplace. Because four out of ten employees are careless in the office. This increases the risk of being targeted by cyber criminals. Their attack methods are becoming more and more sophisticated and many phishing emails can hardly be distinguished from real ones. If you click incorrectly here, cyber criminals can access their computers and the company's network.

Security is more important in private than in the office

“Many users are much more careless when it comes to IT security at work than they would be privately. One of the reasons is the often misguided assumption that the company computer can be replaced and repaired quickly if necessary and that no real damage can occur in the event of a fault. Employees trust that the IT department is prepared for all eventualities and that everything is double and triple secured. In practice, however, it is very different,” says Tim Berghoff, Security Evangelist at G DATA CyberDefense. “An organization's workforce must become part of its security strategy. In this way, the “human problem factor” quickly becomes a valuable asset, without which the security strategy would be in much worse shape. Appropriate employee training can make an important contribution here - and the colleagues also benefit from the knowledge gained beyond the workplace."

32 do not pay attention to security in the home office

Many people are careless, especially when working from home: More than 32 percent state that they do not pay attention to IT security at home. Possible reasons for this: Employees were and are insecure because contact persons in the office are no longer directly accessible and because they have to use additional security measures such as VPN or 2-factor authentication.

"Cybersecurity in numbers" is characterized by a high information density and particular methodological depth: More than 5.000 employees in Germany were questioned in a representative online study on cybersecurity in the professional and private context. The experts from Statista carried out the survey and, thanks to a sample size that is well above the industry standard, can present reliable and valid market research results in the “Cybersecurity in Numbers” booklet.
